In Ian’s Boots was founded by Ron and Holly Miller on behalf of their little boy, Ian, who was killed in a sledding accident while on a trip with his Boy Scout troop in January 2010. The emergency room personnel found a little piece of paper in, of all places, Ian’s snow boot. It contained a Bible verse, James 1:2-4 which speaks to perseverance through times of trial:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you will be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
The impact of that verse on Ian’s parents was enormous. They had just lost their only child at the tender age of twelve -the greatest trial they will ever know- and there was a message in his snow boot to ‘persevere.’
Because the note to persevere was found in Ian’s boot, Ron and Holly felt led to give away shoes and boots and thus, In Ian’s Boots was incorporated in July 2010. In the five years since Ian’s been gone, In Ian’s Boots has given over 80,000 pairs of shoes to those in need, beginning in their local community and branching out throughout the United States and in over 30 countries globally.
Ron and Holly now know that giving shoes away on Ian’s behalf is, indeed, ‘pure joy.’
